Catapult was launched on the first International Day of the Girl Child, on October 11, 2012, as a crowdfunding platform for projects that directly benefit women and girls around the world. Since its launch Catapult has funded projects for women and girls in gender equality, health, justice, and education, and supported projects combating gender based violence, sexism, and so much more!
Through the power of social media and technology, we no longer have to stand on the sidelines, hoping that large institutions combat extreme poverty efficiently, that private corporations take their social responsibility seriously, or that grassroots movements are given the resources they need to create sustainable change. We can now learn, connect and act. Individuals, groups and civil society taking action is an essential part in creating lasting change. When we raise our voices today, we will be heard and we will connect with others, who like us, are raising their voices too.
We are needed, and together we are able to create change.
Through this increasing inter-connectedness we have the ability to learn about circumstances across the globe, and understand the needs of individuals and organizations. With this knowledge, crowdfunding becomes an incredible tool to take part in movements of change. Catapult creates that direct connection between donors and projects, making lasting change in societies.
Catapult makes it possible for us to participate.
As a Swedish saying goes, “every little stream matters.” You can participate with what you have, take action to create change, stand up for what is right and give to a cause, an organization and a project that you believe in. Eventually, all the little streams meander out into an ocean!
On June 1 this year, Chime for Change, a global campaign founded by Gucci to raise funds for and awareness about the empowerment of women and girls, celebrated The Sound of Change, a groundbreaking concert in London featuring well-known international celebrities and musicians, including change-makers, activists and leaders. Chime for Change partnered with Catapult to accelerate progress for on-the-ground projects dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls through access to education, health and justice. Musicians and celebrities have curated projects on Catapult, encouraging online donors and concert-goers to join them in crowdfunding projects they care about. Curators include Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, Salma Hayek Pinault, Frida Giannini, Olivia Wilde, Jada Pinkett Smith, Sarah Brown and Madonna.
Here are some highlights from The Sound of Change:
The Sound of Change raised $3.9 million (after VAT) that, through Catapult, has led to real impact for 84 organizations, funding over 210 projects in 81 different countries!
